The Akti or Akha Teej or Akshay Teej festival, popularly known as Akshaya Tritiya, is an annual springtime festival for the Hindus and Jains. People from India and Nepal see it as an auspicious time to signify the "third day of unending prosperity.” It is celebrated on the third Tithi (lunar day) of Vaisakha month’s Bright Half (Shukla Paksha). However, the festival date varies and is set according to the lunisolar Hindu calendar and falls in April or May of every year in the Gregorian calendar.
In Sanskrit, the word "Akshaya" means "money, never endings" in the sense of "prosperity, hope, joy, success,” while Tritiya means "third.” It is named after the "third lunar day" of the spring month of Vaisakha in the Hindu calendar the day it is observed. Numerous legends are associated with this day. It is said to be the birthday of Lord Parasurama, who is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Also, it is believed that Veda Vyasa and Lord Ganesha started writing Mahabharata on this day. And it was on this day, that Pandavas received the gift of "Akshaya Patra" from Sun God.
There is sacred significance of Akshaya Tritiya amongst the Hindu community as this occasion is considered to be a lucky day. As per the beliefs, any new venture, weddings, business or construction of a building will turn out to be prosperous if started on this day. People also perform holy rites, rituals and acts of charity that are believed to bring grace, prosperity and unending bliss. Starting a new activity or buying valuables like precious jewellery on Akshaya Tritiya is believed to bring success or good fortune.
Devotees worship Lord Vishnu as well as Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi for a prosperous life. They also distribute rice, ghee, clothes, vegetables, fruits and salt to the poor. On this day people who observe the year-long alternative day fasting known as Varshi-tap break their fasting by drinking sugarcane juice.
